TIM HUGO STATEMENT ON CENSORSHIP OF CONSERVATIVES

Centreville, VA – Virginia Lieutenant Governor candidate Tim Hugo issued the following statement today regarding censorship of conservative voices.

“Our founding fathers considered free speech such a fundamental right that they enshrined in it our Constitution as the very First Amendment. Unfortunately, it has become evident in recent years, and especially in recent days, that certain large social media companies do not share our uniquely American commitment to free speech and free expression.

On the contrary, some have taken an approach much closer to communist China with respect to how they operate their companies and that should trouble all Americans. While we can all agree that individuals should not be able to incite violence on these platforms, these companies’ actions have clearly been more about censoring conservative voices.

Censoring conservative voices is a slippery slope that will lead to the destruction of that which we hold most dear which is the vibrant, and sometimes messy, discourse that has made our nation the envy of the world. Make no mistake, we cannot underestimate this threat to the very fabric and soul of what makes the United States unique.

All Americans should be able to express their political opinions and have a fundamental right to hold dissenting views. If these companies want to act as publishers, they should not enjoy the benefits and protections they are currently offered as platforms.”
